I’ve got the girls this week before they go to the beach with their Dad for July 4th. Just in case you don’t know – the summer in Alabama is BRUTAL (this week is supposed to be record-breaking hot), so we decided to go to Wind Creek State Park at Lake Martin today.
I love going to the beach, but there’s something really wonderful about packing a picnic, driving to the lake for the day and knowing that you will be back in your OWN home that same day. Speaking of picnics, I was informed the other day by the oldest that picnics are nasty and she just doesn’t like sandwiches. Well, picnics don’t have to be sandwiches, right? Ours consisted of pasta salad, cold fried chicken (from Kroger) and watermelon. BAM! No sandwiches!
After our picnic and lots of beach swimming, we decided to rent a paddle boat and go tooling around the lake. What was I thinking? HOLY COW… I’ve never done a paddle boat without another adult. That crap is hard to do when your “helpers” are 12 & 9 and have the strength of a newborn puppy! About 20 minutes into our hour (thank goodness I didn’t agree to the begging and pleading for a 3 hour tour), Mommy needed a rest and decided to let the girls go swimming.
They were so funny about jumping off the boat in the middle of the lake. They thought about it and thought about it, but I finally convinced them…
- you have on a life jacket
- there are no crocodiles in Lake Martin (We’re in Alabama, not the Amazon – even though it felt like it today at 100˚)
- if you can’t touch, you won’t have to worry about stepping on anything slimy (which I heard about 50 times when we were at the beach)
First in was the oldest… the little one jumped in shortly after… and then it was ON. They jump, jump, jumped until I didn’t have too much time left to get us back to the dock.
After I had rested my legs for a while, we had to boogie back to the dock (I had to do a 20 minute paddle in less than 10 minutes)… it was pretty painful.
