I say “new” because I got a wild hair and completely redid the whole space the other day. The before wasn’t working for me as a designer OR as an illustrator. I usually spread my stuff (computer, paper, planner, ipad, etc.) out on the sofa or the kitchen table, instead of my office space – which just wasn’t inspiring. I think my low-point was when I had to have a client meeting at my kitchen table. Yes, the KITCHEN! I mean, there’s nothing wrong with my kitchen (I didn’t have any dirty dishes in the sink or anything), but I needed an office space… a place for Laura Murray Creative … a place to inspire me.
I bought this stainless steel kitchen prep table several months ago and it was just sitting in there holding junk. I’m tall (almost 6ft tall TALL) and I needed something higher than the usual desk. I LOVE my desk, but now I just need to find the perfect chair! See that little nook behind the desk? It used to be a built-in ironing board, but I built those little shelves so I can keep important (small) things right in front of me while I work. The door to the old cabinet is above the desk as a shelf! I love recycling old things instead of buying all new stuff!
Office/Studio, meet your new client chair! I’ve had this a while, but it’s kind-of floated around the house from room to room looking for the perfect place to be. I bought this chair for about $30 and re-padded/recovered it for MAYBE $10 of materials. Voila – new client chair! The quilt was one my great grandma made for me when I was born. I LOVE the funky 70’s polyester!
The built-in (WAY TOO LOW) desk across the room now has a cute skirt to hide some inventory storage. YAY for HIDDEN STORAGE! Belle likes it too!
Oh, and Miss Kitty is OBSESSED with the printer. She comes GALLOPING in the office as soon as she hears it turn on. This is her new favorite spot – she can keep her eye on it at all time.
Now everything has a place. I’m not saying it’s all going to stay in it’s place, but I’m trying!
Ok, I’d like to file a Missing Person Report… for ME! What the heck, people? How can I have completely neglected this blog for THAT LONG?! It’s been… ok, nevermind how long it’s been. The point is that I’m writing now, right?
Just keep telling yourself that, Laura…
How do I even begin to recap everything that’s happened in the
almost 2 years (ok, it’s been a LONG TIME, people) since I’ve written? Well, here we go…
Steve and I have been married 3 years. YAY us!
We got a cat.
Steve is working hard on the Alabama Bicentennial and it launches in May!
Maggie is graduating 5th grade in a month-or-so. WHAT THE HECK??
Abby is finishing up her FRESHMAN year of high school. Really feeling old now.
Alex and his girlfriend are getting ready to move to KY… **sniff**
Did I mention that we got a cat?
I’m joining the DAR (ancestry ROCKS!!)
I grew a garden last summer. It died. I’m trying again this year.
I’m writing and illustrating a book (more on that later – it deserves its own post).
Steve recently (last fall) negotiated a HUGE donation for the Archives! Way to go, Babe!
I started a bookclub.
Ok, That’s our last year-and-a-half in a nutshell – but there’s so much more.
I know I haven’t been blowing up the internet with Mama Teasie’s Table lately… But I’ve been working on some really cool stuff for Alabama Pen & Paper. I’ve officially signed up to participate in the Auburn Indian Summer Nights art fair (Oct 9th) and also Junkfest in Columbus (Oct 17) so I’ve been cranking out drawings and other designs for those events. This is what my office looks like most days now. Pens, paper, erasers, markers… All over the place!
Anyway, I’ve been trying out some new ideas lately and have started designing a line of journals, planners and notecards as well. HOPEFULLY I’ll be able to get all of that done in time for the show. My Etsy store still only has my drawings for sale as digital downloads, but soon I will have tangible items for sale as well… I had this epiphany the other day that I have all these great ideas, but if I don’t do something about it, they’re just going to stay “ideas”.
What other ideas do YOU think I should explore?
I guess I need to do some laundry today. That’s at least 4 loads right there.
I’ve been neglecting my chores this week. It’s the first week of school and we have crazy-busy days and have to leave the house at an ungodly hour… I NEED to come home from dropping them off this morning and wash clothes, vacuum, dust, wash dishes and make the beds.
But I REALLY would rather be playing with all this beautiful washi tape and stickers that my penpal sent me.
Decisions that Mama Teasie would never have had to make.
The girls come to our house every other week. That’s our arrangement – week on / week off. Friday is the day we switch and I really like it that way… The first few days the girls are with us are weekend days – no work and no school.
Now that school has started back up, I’m having to re-figure out my schedule.
On the weeks we don’t have the girls, I stay around town and work (I do art at home and I also have a job in sales). Now that the girls are in school (we drive 45 minutes to-and-from our house), I have to re-think what I’m going to do.
Yesterday I went to the park and then to the library for a while before ending my day at Starbucks (free Wifi), but this morning I talked to my best friend and she had a new suggestion. She and her husband moved to Indiana for his job about 2 years ago, but they haven’t sold their house here in town (still holding out hope they will be back). They both have family near here and use the house at Christmas and in the summer. Anyway, she suggested I go out there and hang out during the day and use it as my art studio/office… And it’s only about 15 minutes from the girls’ schools. SCORE!
So this was my office today. It’s a huge long folding table with a plastic tablecloth on it and random chairs (leftovers from when they moved) around it… But there was Wifi and AC and a fridge for my lunch!
And a great view of the weeds in the backyard. Heehee…
I have to admit – I really love the smell of new pencils and erasers and pens and markers. I love stickers and notebooks and whiteout. I’m a school-nerd at heart and I get positively giddy just walking in the office stores this time of year. My palms get sweaty and my heart starts racing when the school year planners hit the shelves…
Mama Teasie’s Table has sort-of taken a backseat this weekend… The past few days we have been focusing on BACK-to-SCHOOL!
From ironing uniforms to making menus and stocking the pantry…
To school supply shopping and filling backpacks… Today, our last official day of summer, we celebrated with Micky Mouse pancakes and a trip to get a snow-cone. The girls are already counting down the days to next summer…
only 9 months to go…
Well, I’ve done it. I’ve opened an Etsy store with some of my drawings. I’ve named it Alabama Pen & Paper and am in the process of registering the name.
The 5 drawings below represent the first few in a new “southern farming” series. These are a nod to my farming roots and I’ll be working on more to go with these. I know Mama Teasie and Pa didn’t grow cotton, per-se, but it’s the thought that counts!
Go check them out and see what you think.
The Etsy listings are for a printable coloring page for you to download and print as many times as you would like. They are sized for an 8.5×11 (letter size) page and should print perfectly on any printer. The drawings can be printed on regular copy paper for use with crayons, markers or colored pencils, or they can be printed on something a bit sturdier (card stock) for use with any painting medium. For now I’m only offering my artwork as digital downloads, but I’m working on developing a physical product as well… stay tuned for more awesomeness!
